Life Story for Margaret Ruth Sandstrom (Bolan)

Margaret Ruth Bolan was born on September 7, 1917 to Samuel and Winifred Bolan at Denholm, SK. She was raised on their farm with her 6 siblings. The family all worked hard to make ends meet. Margaret or "Ruth" as she was called, had to do chores both inside and out as farm girls do. She loved playing ball and going to school dances. The family lost their mother in 1927 leaving the girls of the family to each take turns at running the household. Ruth was the last to leave home.

In 1944 Margaret and the family lost Margaret's twin brother in World War II on D-Day, she was especially close to him. She also had a special bond with her sister Loyola who is now 102 years of age.

Margaret decided to become a psychiatric nurse and trained in Battleford, SK and graduated in 1946. She worked as a psychiatric nurse in Battleford after graduation then as a practical nurse in Camrose, AB and then Estevan, SK.

She met and married Eric Sandstrom in 1951. They lived on the farm for 6 years and moved to Estevan to their new home on Valley Street. Margaret remained in that home for 50 years. Eric and Margaret raised 3 children. Once they retired from farming they enjoyed going fishing and made numerous trips in their motor home. They travelled to Scandinavia, Disneyland and Texas. They loved cards, cribbage and bowling. They both passionately watched curling on television but Margaret loved watching all sports. Margaret was an avid bingo player. They were very close to all their grandchildren and played an important part in raising them as well. Eric and Margaret were married for 44 years.

Margaret was a fabulous cook and her chocolate chip cookies were the best. Her delicious roast beef and turkey dinners will always be remembered.

Eric passed away in 1995. Margaret continued to live in her home for a few years then made Yardley Place her home for about 5 years. She was blessed to have good friends and family that supported her. She has been a resident at Estevan Regional Nursing Home since 2012.
