Life Story for Egon Gade

Egon attended school in Vrensted, Denmark and worked for local area farmers and helped in his dad’s shoe shop until joining the Danish Army and serving in occupied Germany. When he decided to come to Canada he boarded the MS Murdock and arrived in Halifax on March 18, 1951. Egon boarded the train for Wauchope where he was met by his brother Andy. He remained at the farm for a while then travelled to Alberta and British Columbia where he was a lumberjack and panned for gold. He later returned to Saskatchewan and was employed at the power plant in Estevan when he received word of his brother Andy’s death. He returned to Wauchope to help Anna with the farm and her children Harvey and Juanita. Egon and Anna married on July 2, 1955 and Shirley Anne arrived in 1957. They remained on the farm until 1973 when they moved into Redvers and Harvey settled on the farm.

Egon continued to help on the farm but now had more time to enjoy some of his favourite activities: hockey, curling, skiing, tennis, badminton, horseshoes, woodworking and music – playing his violin and mandolin.

Over the years Egon belonged to several organizations: Co-op board member, Moose Mountain Choir and of course the Golden Age Center where he played cards or pool almost daily. Egon & Anna enjoyed several trips to Denmark, California, Florida and Alberta visiting family and friends.

Egon had a sense of humour. He enjoyed his grandchildren and listening to their adventures or telling them his stories. He also was a plain spoken person who told you what he thought so you knew where you stood with him.

After Anna’s death Egon continued living in his own house and to plant a garden every year. He was out watering his garden the night before his hospital admission.
