1928 - 2019
Mary “Myrtle” Oneszuk passed away peacefully on June 26, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Long Term Care, Estevan, SK at the age of 91 years. Mary “Myrtle” Oneszuk was born to Mike and Francis Oneszuk on May 12, 1928 in Bienfait, Saskatchewan at her parents’ home. She grew up with one sister Helen and the two girls helped on the family farm maintaining their large gardens and raising livestock in order to get through the era of the Dirty Thirties.
Myrtle attended the Bienfait Rural School for grades one to eight later attending Bienfait High School where she graduated. After graduation, Mary took a nurse’s aide course by correspondence and wrote her exams at the Bienfait hospital later travelling to Winnipeg to complete her License Practical Nursing certificate graduating in 1950. She nursed for 2 years at St Joseph’s Hospital before starting her family.
Myrtle studied art as a teen, taking a few courses in Winnipeg to enhance her artistic skills. She was incredibly grateful to have had the chance to draw portraits and create ceramics for her loved ones. Those pieces are treasured by each family member. Her talents later transformed into cake decorating which complemented her love for baking. She really did love the kitchen and her passion to provide delicacies for her family became one of her biggest joys. She was an amazing cook and her family looked forward to her “traditional” dishes that made it to the holiday dinner table each year.
Myrtle met Jerry Krupka, who immigrated from Ukraine in 1949 and they were married a year later. They had two daughters, Margaret Anne and Lori Lynn. Mary took pride in her home on 4th Street with her pink floral decor, bird baths in her large back yard, and beautiful summer flowers in her garden. She enjoyed hosting family holiday dinners and serving everyone on her Old Country Rose china.
Mary started a new chapter of her life moving to Long Term Care at St. Joseph’s in which she lived for ten years. She developed close relationships with her fellow neighbors down the hall and looked forward to her coffee time to socialize. The staff at the residence became like family to her and she made sure they each knew that they were her “favorite.” She became a fan of FaceTime when she got to interact with her family through video and was even more excited when her grandchildren, including her “honorary Grandson” Dallas, would surprise her for a visit. Mary looked forward to her outings and the opportunities to go for brunch with her extended families and friends as she loved hearing what their families were up to and seeing their photos.
It was also in this home that she met a special friend who provided even more happiness to her final years. Even at the well-lived age of 91, she had daily calls to each of her daughters and the smile she had when her grandkids would call to check-in with her could light up a room.
Myrtle was strong in her faith and the family rejoices that she received Christ as her savior two years prior to her death. Myrtle’s entire family is forever grateful to have been a part of her life. She had such a positive attitude in all aspects of life which will never be forgotten. Mary always said that her biggest accomplishment in life was her family and they will always remember at the end of each phone call she’d say, “I love you and all of your family. Bye Bye”
Mary’s memory will be forever cherished by her children, Margaret (Garth) Drader, Lori Naka (Carl Henneberg). Myrtle will also be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Shawna (Jason) Vaandrager, Dustin (Heidi) Drader, Devin (Sherry) Drader, Kiya (Cam) Naka and Kody Naka; great grandchildren, Tyrell, Jessena Vaandrager, Dominic, Dylan Drader, Marayah, Luci-Ann, Charlie Drader, and Jack Jarvis; son in law Kingo Naka; sister Helen Jacobson; nieces, Valerie, Shelley, Darla (Roger) LaRochelle and Dione (Gerry) Aquin; great nephews/nieces, Ryan, Dylan LaRochelle and J’Lynn, Jarred and Hailey Aquin.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Michael Oneszuk and Frances Oneszuk (nee Lencysen); infant sister, Victoria; husband Jaroslaw Krupka and brother in law Allan Jacobson.
The private family interment will take place at a later date.
