Michael “Kelly” Avery
1957 – 2020
Kelly Avery late of Estevan, SK passed away suddenly on Monday, January 6, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan at the age of 62 years.
Kelly was born on January 17, 1957 to Walter and Doreen (Spicer) in Moose Jaw, SK. After moving from Moose Jaw to Saskatoon, the family moved from Saskatoon to Estevan in November of 1969, where Kelly lived until his passing.
Kelly and Arlette (Knight) were married on March 1, 1980. Two sons, Talon Michael and Barrett Kelly, completed their family.
Family vacations to camp and explore in Canada and the U.S.A were properly planned, implemented and enjoyed. Locally he participated in recreational hockey, boxing and instructing, the Estevan Sky Diving Club, weight lifting and fitness. Kelly’s first motorcycle, purchased in his teens, fueled his lifelong ambition to ride. His Harley Davidson took him and Arlette to British Columbia (Shuswap and Victoria), Montana, Washington State, South Dakota (Deadwood and Sturgis) and Florida for the Daytona Bike Week. Vacationing in the sunny south with his family, as they did for the past 20 winters, was the highlight of his year.
He earned his welding certification in 1977 through the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Moose Jaw and his journeyman qualification following his training. Upon completion of his Crane Certification he began the work that he most enjoyed for the last 30+ years. Kelly was employed by what is now the Westmoreland Mine for more than 40 years. He was a contributing member of the Crane and Hoist Trade Advisory Board and examined national curriculum for crane operators. His efforts with the Saskatchewan Occupation Health and Safety Division continue to positively impact workplace safety throughout Saskatchewan.
Kelly was predeceased by his grandparents, Percy and Pauline (Kellington) Avery, Albert and Rose Spicer and Rita Spicer; as well as his parents-in-law Gordon and Angie (Kozlowski) Knight.
Kelly will be deeply missed by his loving wife Arlette (Knight) Avery and their sons, Talon Avery of Estevan, SK and Master Corporal Barrett Avery of Brandon, MB. Precious memories will remain with his parents, Walter and Doreen Avery; sisters Janet Keating and Glenda (Michael) Seipp and brothers-in-law, Clayton (Barb) and Wayde (Veronica); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Kelly’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, Estevan, SK with Sandy Dalziel officiating. A time of lunch and fellowship will take place in the fellowship hall immediately after the service. Interment will follow at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens.
