Obituary for Reginald Victor Matthies

Reginald Victor Matthies
Reginald Victor Matthies was born on March 15, 1934 at the old Estevan Hospital. Reg was the youngest child of Otto and Lydia Matthies. He passed away on August 24, 2014 at Tatagwa View in Weyburn.

As a child, Reg attended Golden Hart School in Hitchcock and Bryant School. At the age of 16, Reg went to work at the M&S Coal Mine where he remained for 4 years. Reg then went to work at Utility Coals where he worked for 18 years until being diagnosed with MS in 1973. At that time he went on permanent disability. Reg was able to sustain his mobility until the last few years when he has had to rely more on a walker and then a wheelchair.

Reg was a devoted husband and took care of his wife Jean, keeping his promise to give her the best care he possibly could until her passing in 2011. Reg collected pocket watches and chains. He enjoyed traveling with Jean to British Columbia and Alberta. Most of all, Reg loved to visit with people and whenever he was out he always found someone to talk to. MS made his speech slow but it never robbed him of his love of conversation, often starting a story with “now listen to this”. He was filled with stories of family history and sadly if you didn’t listen to them when he was alive, it’s too late now to hear them. Let us cherish our memories of this dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, until we meet again.

Reg was predeceased by his wife Jean; parents, Otto and Lydia; brothers, Harold, Raymond, Irvine and Leonard; sisters, Louise, Irene and Adeline and son-in-law Bob Boyce.

He is survived by his son Walter (Florence); daughters, Wanda (Bob) and Susan (Ken) Wingert; 3 grandsons; 4 granddaughters; 3 great grandsons and one special niece Sandra (Robert) George.

A Celebration of Reg's life will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Tatagwa View, Weyburn, with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Macoun Cemetery.
