Memories of Marie

When my mother, Madeliene Matte, died a decade ago, Marie insisted on purchasing, cooking, and serving an entire turkey dinner for our family of 20, which she transported to our house in the back of her car, steaming hot and delicious. It was an act of love for our family, given when we were most vulnerable, and is something we will always remember and treasure.

Months later, when I came back to Estevan for the burial of Mom’s ashes, Marie joined us for the graveside service. Sensing how distraught, abandoned and alone I was feeling, Marie gently came to my side and held my hand during those final moments as I said my last farewells to my dear mother. Having your sweet mother step in and comfort me at one of the lowest points in my life meant the world to me and made me love her even more!

The last time I saw Marie was when she was in the hospital in Regina about three summers ago, very weak and very ill. Loretta and Vicki were hovering at her side, administering to her with extremely tender and loving care. It struck me how Marie’s greatest legacy is the wonderful family she raised, who all are now exemplifying their mother’s beautiful spirit. She, indeed, lives on……
