Life Story for Campbell Forrester

Campbell Forrester

Campbell Forrester was born on a farm one and a half miles west of Bromhead, SK on February 13, 1919. In 1922 Camby’s father rented out the farmland and the family moved to Bromhead. Camby grew up in Bromhead with his parents, Bob and Louise, brothers Gordon, Lonny, Jim and sister Helen. Two other siblings died in infancy. Bob Forrester took over a grain elevator and was a grain buyer for 25 years. When Camby was old enough he learned how to operate the elevator. Camby also enjoyed taking care of the family’s cattle and horses.

In 1928 the boys were old enough to start farming the family farm. Starting in 1939 Camby also drove truck for his brother, Gordon, for several years. He hauled coal from the Estevan mines and gasoline and oil from Regina. One day in 1940, Camby was driving the truck to Estevan when he stopped to pick up two sisters walking on the highway. They were walking to Torquay to go to school. He took a liking to the older one, Ruby Parson, and soon they were seeing more of each other. They were married November 10, 1945 at Ruby’s family farm two miles west of Torquay. Camby and Ruby moved to a house in Bromhead and Camby farmed his Dad’s land and also the Parson farm. He also did some mechanical work in Gordon’s garage.

In 1949, they bought the Parson farm and moved there with their first baby. The farm grew and so did the family. They raised five daughters, Louise, Laurine, Sharon, Judy and Janice and four sons, Gerry, Duane, Glen and Dale.

Campbell was also involved in several organizations. He was a councillor for Rural Municipality #6 for 32 consecutive years. Camby was also a Torquay Credit Union board member for 27 years and an original director of the Weyburn Inland Terminal. At age 90 he finally resigned as the founding president of the Torquay West Drainage Ditch administration.

In 1988, Camby and Ruby moved to an apartment condo in Estevan. They moved to Hill View Manor Care Home on April 14, 2009.

Over the years the family has grown to 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
