There are so many terrific things that I remember about Grandma. She had such a wonderful sense of humour. Grandma always caught me off guard with her impeccable timing and sly little punch lines.
Grandma and I shared a love of broadway musicals. She had went to quite a few including “Phantom of the Opera”, “Cats” and “Les Miserables.” Later she bought the recordings of these hits and sent me copies. I played those tapes to the bone! She highly recommended all but “Cats.” She said: “adults who dress up like cats and run around on a stage are just weird.” Years later, when I travelled to London, England in 2012 my boyfriend took me to see “Les Miserables.” I was ecstatic. The first thing I said to him as we sat down was “Boy, would my Grandma love to get a load of this place!” I’m so glad she was on my mind all that night. At the end of the evening, Johnathan proposed.
Grandma was an incredible cook. Everything she made was made with love. Roasts, fluffy dinner rolls, and mouthwatering perogies were my absolute favourites! We loved when Grandma came to visit. My Mom’s cooking and Grandma’s at the same time was better than the finest restaurant.
When Grandma came to visit my family on the east coast we loved to take long walks. I especially loved walks on our beaches. I can’t tell you what an amazing experience it was to walk by an ocean so big, and vast. Yet there I was by a little lady that had enough love in her heart to fill that ocean- and then some.
If I could thank Grandma for all the things she has done, I would thank her for her selflessness, her patience, her kindness, her humour, and for teaching me to not focus on the mistakes that I make in life, but to celebrate the way I pick myself up after failure. Most of all I would thank her for taking the time to teach me, how God is always there at all times of my life. He is there through all of our happiness and our sorrows. He is helping us to not be sad, but to instead celebrate the life of one incredible woman.
