I had the pleasure of working with Joyce when I was a social worker in Estevan and she was a foster mom. I
admired her strength and the ability to see the good in everyone. She was a special lady. I hope she knew the impact she had on people.

I never met Joyce, but I’ve heard she was a wonderful loving woman. I am so grateful that she took in my brother and loved him and turned him into the man he is today. My condolences to Dean and the rest of the family. So very sorry for your loss.

I first met Joyce and Cal in 1973 , when i drove a foster child from the bus depot in Estevan, back to their home . It was a first of many trips to North Portal over the next 10 years. I was a social worker for the Department of Social Services.
I placed many children with the Mitchells during that time, infants toddlers and teenagers. Joyce taught me a lot about children and their care, about acceptance and commitment, about simply standing by in support of others. We made thousands of miles together taking special needs children to specialists in Regina and Saskatoon. These were some of my favorite times with Joyce. She knew how to travel with children ! Joyce was a great short order cook, setting up a quick meal for any child who was arriving and treating the social workers in the process. You could call her at 3 in the morning , she was never perturbed and had the coffee on when we arrived. Joyce always updated me with a litany about all the previous children who had lived with them (many kept contact with her) The last time I saw her at the Estevan Nursing Home she gave that same listing of who was where and how they were doing., hoping I had news of those she did not.
We have lost a special woman . A well deserved rest,Joyce .

Joyce was a quiet humble woman who gave of herself her whole life, welcoming many children into their home through the foster care system. She was dedicated to these youth. Many of them returned to visit her, and others continued to support her in her declining years. It was a privilege to know Joyce Mitchell.
