Should you go first and I remain
One thing I’d have you do…
Walk slowly down that long lone path…
For one day I will follow you.
I’ll want to know each step you take
That I may walk the same…
For some day down that lonely road
You will hear me call your name.
-Love Aldyth

Where do you start remembering all the wonderful memories of someone who was a giant of a man in literal and metaphorical senses? There are so many memories - Larry and Dad talking to one another at Christmas here in Ottawa a couple of years ago, and the way Larry respectfully spoke with Dad, despite Dad's trouble with memory and recollection; the time I brought my bride to-be to Lampman in 1990 and he wraps his big arms around her and lifts her up and starts laughing; how he would sit at your kitchen table and listen and laugh at our silliness as we iced freezer cookies and constantly chirped each other about our favourite hockey teams; playing ball with him on the Cubs, and how he would generously suggest to "Uncle Raymond" that he could sit the next inning so "Reggie could get in the game"; coming to Ottawa and coming to the rink to watch my son play hockey; and of course being in awe of him watching him on the ice. Larry was a profoundly good and decent human being. He was fair and kind to everyone and had a positive impact on everyone with whom he came into contact. Such people do not come along very often and we will miss him. But, we also want to say thank-you to you Aldyth and all the kids for sharing Larry so unselfishly with everyone all these years. Your willingness to share him with us has made all of us better for knowing him. The Shukles.
